Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • All-Purpose Flour (1 ¾ cups) – Provides structure.
  • Cocoa Powder (¾ cup) – Use unsweetened for deep chocolate flavor.
  • Sugar (1 ¾ cups) – Adds sweetness.
  • Baking Powder (1 ½ tsp) – Helps the cake rise.
  • Baking Soda (1 ½ tsp) – Creates a light, airy texture.
  • Salt (½ tsp) – Enhances flavor.
  • Eggs (2 large) – Adds richness and structure.
  • Milk (1 cup) – Keeps the cake moist.
  • Vegetable Oil (½ cup) – Makes the cake tender.
  • Vanilla Extract (2 tsp) – Enhances flavor.
  • Hot Water (1 cup) – Brings out the cocoa flavor.

For the Marshmallow Frosting:

  • Marshmallow Fluff (1 ½ cups) – Sweet and gooey.
  • Unsalted Butter (½ cup, softened) – Makes the frosting creamy.
  • Powdered Sugar (1 ½ cups) – For structure and sweetness.
  • Vanilla Extract (1 tsp) – Adds extra flavor.
  • Heavy Cream (2 tbsp) – For smooth consistency.

For the Topping:

  • Graham Crackers (1 cup, crushed) – For that classic s’mores crunch.
  • Chocolate Chips (½ cup, melted) – For drizzling on top.
  • Mini Marshmallows (½ cup) – Optional, for garnish.

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  4. Stir in hot water (batter will be thin, but that’s okay!).
  5. Divide batter evenly between the cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.

Step 2: Prepare the Marshmallow Frosting

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat softened butter until creamy.
  2. Add marshmallow fluff, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Beat until light and fluffy.

Step 3: Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the marshmallow frosting on top.
  2. Sprinkle with crushed graham crackers.
  3. Place the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides.

Step 4: Add the Toppings

  1. Drizzle melted chocolate over the cake.
  2. Sprinkle more graham cracker crumbs and mini marshmallows on top.
  3. For extra gooeyness, toast the marshmallows with a kitchen torch (optional).

Notes

  • Use hot water in the batter – It enhances the chocolate flavor.
  • Don’t overmix the batter – This keeps the cake soft.
  • Let the cakes cool completely before frosting – To prevent melting.
  • Toast the marshmallows – If you want that authentic campfire feel!
